A superior sounding Stradivari model violin by Charles Francois Gand, known as Gand “pere”, and made the year he succeeded Nicolas Lupot (1758-1824), the most reknowned of all Paris makers. The two-piece maple back is of medium to narrow curl descending from right to left. The two-piece spruce table is of medium to broad grain broadening towards the flanks. The varnish is an orange-red color over a yellow ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 359 mm, Upper Bouts: 168 mm, Middle Bouts: 113 mm, Lower Bouts: 206 mm. Certificate from Lyon & Healy, Chicago, dated 1934. Formerly used extensively in performances and recordings by a member of the Philadelphia Orchestra
