English, Violin, c.1680-1720, London

This violin has a Baroque set-up with the original neck and bass-bar, and bears some similarity to the work of William Baker & John Grice, who were London makers of the late 17th & early 18th centuries. It has a one-piece back of narrow curl descending from left to right, ribs and head of faint medium curl, and a two-piece table of faint medium-broad grain narrowing at the flanks. The varnish is a light golden-orange brown over a golden ground.
