Genoa School, Violin, c.1730-1760, Genoa

A violin by a maker of the Genoese School c. 1730, with the pearwood head reminiscent of the sometimes rustic work of Bernardo Calcani, and very similar to the work of Joseph Cavaleri of Genoa, The two-piece maple back is of slab cut faint irregular medium curl. The two-piece spruce table is of fine grain broadening slightly towards the flanks. The varnish is an orange brown color over a pale golden ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 361 mm, Upper Bouts: 160 mm, Middle Bouts: 107 mm, Lower Bouts: 202 mm; previously attributed to the work of Antonio Lansa of Brescia c.1675, and with an interesting provenance and history of ownership
