Georg Ruoff, 15-3/8″, Viola, c.1670, Fussen

Ruoff (1646-1725) was one of the earlist violin makers in Fussen. His instruments greatly resemble the work of other Fussen makers of the period, especially that of Georg Fuerst. This viola has been somewhat reduced in size far in its past, and is presently quite easy to handle and full-sounding for its smaller dimensions. The two-piece maple back is of faint medium horizontal curl. The two-piece spruce table is of medium grain broadening towards the flanks. The varnish is a red orange brown color over a golden ground. Measurements: Length of back: 391 mm (15 – 3/8″), Upper Bouts: 191 mm, Middle Bouts: 133 mm, Lower Bouts: 240 mm.
