Giovanni Cavani, probably, 15-15/16″, viola, c.1900, Modena
A viola attributed to Giovanni Cavani. The one-piece slab cut maple back is of plain curl. The two-piece spruce table is of fine grain broadening towards the flanks. The generously applied varnish is a reddish-orange brown color over a golden ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 405 mm, Upper Bouts: 191 mm, Middle Bouts: 137 mm, Lower Bouts: 238 mm, String Length: 365 mm.
