Hans Christof Fleischer, Viola da Gamba, c.1680s, Hamburg

A bass/tenor viola da gamba attributed to Hans Christof Fleischer, and bearing what is likely his original label dated Hamburg 168_. Fleischer was the brother-in-law of Joachim Tielke and he was known as a maker of keyboards and guitars. This instrument was made in the English manner, with a 3-stave bent top. The Hamburg style polychromed head retains its original paint and was carved in the likeness of a woman?s head. Restorations were expertly completed by John Pringle and Andrew Dipper. You can also hear this instrument on the Gerald Trimble?s album Uncharted on MSR records. Body length: 60cm, String length: 63cm.
