Pieter Rombouts, attributed to, cello, c.1700, Amsterdam

This instrument was expertly cut-down from it?s original larger size and bears the label of Hendrik Jacobs. The two-piece maple back is slab cut, with birdseye figure in the ribs. The six-piece spruce table is of varied grain, mostly broad. The varnish is a dark red-orange-brown color over a light gold ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 741 mm, Upper Bouts: 325 mm, Middle Bouts: 219 mm, Lower Bouts: 409 mm. With the certificate of R & M Millant, Paris, attributing it to the work of Pieter Rombouts of Amsterdam, the scroll probably by Andreas Castagneri of Paris circa 1740.
