Thomas Dodd, Violin, c.1810-, London

A Stradivari model violin from the London shop of Thomas Dodd, where violins sold by and labeled T. Dodd were in fact made by Bernard Simon Fendt I, John Lott, Sr., or as in this case, possibly the work of Samuel Gilkes. The two-piece maple back is of mostly medium curl. The two-piece spruce table is of fine grain. The varnish is an orange-red color over a golden ground. The original neck re-angled at the heel. Measurements: Length of Back: 355 mm, Upper Bouts: 168 mm, Middle Bouts: 109 mm, Lower Bouts: 204 mm. With a 1958 Certificate from Balmforth & Son, London.
