An early violin by Thomas Kennedy srongly showing the influence of his teacher William Forster III. The two-piece partial slab-cut maple back is of narrow curl ascending from the center joint. The two-piece spruce table is of irregular and wavy medium grain. It is signed in pen on the upper inside back: Thos. Kennedy/ N 19 Prince St,/Westminster/1806. The varnish is a lustrous orange brown color over a golden ground. Measurements: Length of Back: 355 mm, Upper Bouts: 167 mm, Middle Bouts: 108 mm, Lower Bouts: 201 mm. It is highly arched, producing a sweet and colorful sound, and is the earliest dated instrument we have seen by this maker.
